Moritz Christian Friedrich Lampe (born December 4, 1899 in Bremen , † May 2, 1945 in Kleinmachnow ) was a German writer , librarian and editor .

biography

Lampe spent his youth in Bremen . Because of a walking disability resulting from a childhood disease ( bone tuberculosis ), he did not take an active part in either the First or Second World War. He studied literature , art history and philosophy in Heidelberg, Leipzig, Munich and Freiburg, where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1928 on Goeckingk's songs from two lovers .

He initially returned to Bremen as a lecturer at Schünemann Verlag and co-editor of Schünemann's monthly magazine . After the magazine was discontinued in the course of the global economic crisis , he trained with Erwin Ackerknecht at the state library school in Stettin as a people's librarian , where he was employed in 1932 at the Hamburg public library .

Since 1934, Lampe lived in Berlin. As an author, he belonged to a group that met in the house of the Jewish doctor Lothar Luft (the brothers Joachim Maass and Edgar Maass were among them, as were Martin Beheim-Schwarzbach and, from Munich, Wilhelm Emanuel Süskind ). In 1937 he joined the publishing house of his compatriot Ernst Rowohlt in Berlin as a lecturer, and after he was brought into line he worked in the same position for Goverts, Diederichs and Henssel. Here he was friends with Horst Lange and Oda Schaefer , to whom he liked to read. Bombed out in the Second World War, he finally found shelter with the author Ilse Molzahn, who was edited by him, in Kleinmachnow, where he was shot on May 2, 1945 by Russian soldiers who suspected him to be an SS man because he did not have the photo in his military ID card looked more similar. He was buried in a war grave as a Volkssturm man at the Kleinmachnow forest cemetery.

His first book "On the Edge of the Night" was confiscated and confiscated by the Nazis shortly after its publication in October 1933 , because in it he had hinted at a love affair between a Bremen housewife and a "negro" and had relatively openly portrayed homosexual tendencies. The ballad Das dunkle Boot (1936) and the second novel Septembergewitter (1937) could appear unmolested, but were largely ignored. The Band Door to Door. Ten stories and one , completed in 1944, could only be delivered posthumously (1946). This is how Lampe's complaint becomes understandable: "I always have bad luck with my books."

In the Federal Republic of Germany his books fared little better. Although colleagues such as Hermann Hesse , Wolfgang Koeppen , Alfred Andersch , Hans Bender , Heinz Piontek and Peter Härtling repeatedly pointed out Lampe, the two editions of the complete work (1955, 1986) only recorded sluggish sales. That only changed with the new edition initiated by Jürgen Dierking , which has been published in individual volumes by Wallstein Verlag in Göttingen since the author's 100th birthday (and was even temporarily available as paperback from dtv). In 1997, Patrick Modiano remembered the author of On the Edge of Night in his novel Dora Bruder . Academic interest in the Bremen writer has also grown steadily in recent years, and Italian versions of the two novels have joined the older French and Dutch translations, while English, Serbian and Spanish versions are about to be published.

Lampe, who was just as familiar with Greco-Roman antiquity as he was in the 18th and 19th centuries, but was also familiar with the literature of the fin de siècle and international modernism, assigned himself to magical realism (which he himself learned from Goethe meant to track down). Lyrically dense, rhythmic and atmospherically enriched prose and regionally colored colloquial dialogues alternate. In his works he often used a representation technique based on film : cuts, pans, cross-fades.
