Maurice Carême (born May 12, 1899 in Wavre , † January 13, 1978 in Anderlecht ) was a Belgian writer.

Carême came from a humble background; his father was a painter, his mother ran a small shop. He was a very good student and therefore received a scholarship that enabled him to attend the École normal primaire of Tirlemont. In 1918 he got a job as a teacher in Anderlecht. In 1919 he founded the literary magazine Nos Jeunes in Brussels , which he renamed La Revue indépendante in 1920 . During this time he had first contacts with contemporary artists such as Edmond Vandercammen and the painter Félix De Boeck .

At the end of 1925 his first volume of poetry, 63 illustrations pour un jeu de l'oie, was published . In the following years poems were written under the influence of Surrealism and Futurism , which appeared in the volumes Hôtel bourgeois (1930), Chansons pour Caprine and Reflets d'hélices (1932). He later turned to a decidedly simple language and wrote two essays on literature for children: Poèmes de gosses (1933) and Proses d'enfants .

Alongside Géo Norge , Pierre Bourgeois , Georges Linze , Claire and Yvan Goll , André Salmon , Edmond Vandercammen and René Verboom , Carême was one of the founders of the Journal des Poètes in 1931 . In 1933 he studied declamation at the Brussels Conservatory with Madeleine Renaud-Thévenet . In the same year he built the maison blanche on avenue Nellie Melba in Anderlecht . The building has housed the Fondation Maurice Carême since 1975 and the Musée Maurice Carême since 1978 .

In 1935 the volume of poetry Mère appeared , which is considered to be Carême's main work. It was praised by literary critics and awarded the Belgian Prix Triennal de poésie in 1938 and formed the basis for Darius Milhaud's Cantate de l'enfant et de la mère . In 1943 Carêmes stopped teaching and has lived as a freelance writer ever since. In the same year he allied himself with Jeannine Burny, who worked as his secretary until his death, then headed the Fondation Maurice Carême and to which he dedicated La bien-aimée in 1965 . In 1954, the first of Carêmes' 17 stays took place in Orval Abbey. Here he studied the writings of the great mystics , Indian and Chinese philosophy and the writings of Teilhard de Chardins and Rabindranath Tagore . Works such as the volume of poems Heure de grâce (1957) were created during this time .

In 1972 he was appointed Prince en poésie of Paris. The fantastic novel Medua was written in the last years of his life . In 1975 he founded the Maurice Carême Foundation . At his request, Carême was buried in his birthplace.

In total, Carême published more than eighty collections of poetry, novels, short stories, essays and translations. His works served as templates for films and were set to music by numerous composers.
