Peder Nielsen Horrebow

Peder Nielsen Horrebow (born May 14, 1679 in Løgstør , Jutland , † April 15, 1764 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish astronomer .

Life

Horrebow became professor of mathematics at the University of Copenhagen in 1714 . He was also director of the university's observatory. In the years 1738–1739 and 1747–1748 he was rector of the University of Copenhagen. Horrebow developed a precision method of astronomy and geodesy for determining the pole height, the so-called Horrebow-Talcott method . This was rediscovered by Andrew Talcott in 1833 .

In 1746 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences . The lunar crater Horrebow is named after him.

His sons Christian Pedersen Horrebow (1718–1776) and Peder Horrebow (1728–1812) were also astronomers.
