Georg Count Apponyi von Nagy-Apponyi (born December 29, 1808 in Pressburg , † February 28, 1899 at Gut Eberhard near Pressburg) was a Hungarian nobleman and politician .

Life

He came from the Apponyi family , was first a clerk, then secretary of the Hungarian court chancellery . From 1843/44 he became politically active. As court chancellor he led the conservative-aristocratic party from 1844 and, as a resolute opponent of all national-Hungarian endeavors, raised the opposition against himself through his system of county administrators. An agreement with opposition leader Lajos Kossuth failed when the revolution of 1848/49 broke out .

Due to the revolution in Hungary without a political function, he initially withdrew, and in 1859 Count Apponyi became a lifelong member of the Vienna Imperial Council . He campaigned for the independence of Hungary and became an influential leader of the national party. On October 20, 1860, he became Judex curiae in Pest , where he presided over the conferences on the reorganization of the Hungarian administration of justice.

As authorized commissioner, he opened the state parliament in Buda on April 6, 1861 and led the presidium in the upper house. After the state parliament was dissolved (August 21), he remained in office as Judex curiae. Hopes that he would be able to achieve a compromise between Austria and Hungary did not come true, whereupon he resigned on April 8, 1863.

Apart from his participation in the state parliament in 1865 and a few meetings of the upper house, he lived in Pressburg from then on.
