Announcement of honor boy shooting 1925

The boys' shooting is a folk festival that takes place every year on the second weekend in September or the weekend before the day of prayer in Zurich on the shooting range Albisgüetli from Saturday to Monday.

occasion

The first modern “boy shooting” took place around 1899, in which around 5,000 boys between the ages of 13 and 17 competed for the title of shooting king . Girls have also been admitted since 1991 (there were female marksmen in 1997, 2004, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2019). All young people who live and / or go to school in the canton of Zurich are eligible to participate. The entry fee is twelve francs and includes ammunition and a bratwurst.

The shooting competition takes place from Saturday to Monday. The Swiss Army's assault rifle 90 is used to shoot at an A-target with a 6-division (5 shots). There is an additional point for each hit. From 28 points there is a price. If several shooters reach 34 or 35 points, the shooter king will be determined in the cutout on Monday. The rifle king or queen receives prize money of 5,000 Swiss francs (as of 2017); other shooters in the front ranks often receive goods from the gift table.

In the city of Zurich, the afternoon on Knabenschießen Monday is a half- day holiday for city staff , which many other employers also join: Many shops are closed from 1 p.m. Since the city council also declares Monday mornings to be company holidays every year, teachers and students, for example, have the whole day off from school.

For several years now, shooting has faded into the background compared to Chilbi operations. For the last few years there has been a happy hour on Mondays , during which visitors can travel for half an hour free of charge on all Chilbibahnen.

The boys' shooting attracts around 850,000 visitors every year, making it the largest festival in Zurich.

history

"Knabenschießen", formerly known as " Chnaabeschüußet" and not as it is called today, "Knabenschießen", goes back to the pre-military weapons exercise of the civic boys . In order to awaken the joy of it among them, the riflemen were already waving prizes in the 17th century, the best a thaler with three silver chains. The youth then marched through the city, divided into two companies with flags, drums and pipes, where they were offered drinks of honor.

The festival took place in Sihlhölzli near the city until the 19th century, but was not continued for the time being after the incorporation in 1893 and only resumed at the new location in Albisgüetli in 1899.

The date of the second weekend in September continues that of the old Zürichilbi , which took place on September 11th, the festival of the patron saint of the Great Minster , Felix and Regula .

There used to be a Chnaabeschiesset associated with prize shooting in Glarus and Nidwalden .

Known shooters

In 1832 the Zürcherisches Wochen-Blatt listed the "orphan" Alexander Rordorf as the winner.
