Live and act

Linklater was the son of Master Mariner Robert Baikie Linklater (1865-1916) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Young († 1957). He completed his school years at the Aberdeen Grammar School and then began to study medicine and English literature at the University of Aberdeen . At the beginning of the First World War he interrupted his studies and volunteered for the Black Watch ( Royal Regiment of Scotland ). After the end of the war he returned to the university, gave up medicine and successfully completed his studies in literature.

Between 1925 and 1927 Linklater was an editorial member of the Times of India in Bombay . After his return he was back at the University of Aberdeen for a short time and went to Cornell University as a " Commonwealth Fellow " in 1928 , and later to the University of California, Berkeley . He wrote his first book in the USA, which was a great success in England.

In 1930 Linklater returned to Aberdeen and was entrusted there with a teaching position for "English literature". On June 1, 1933, he married the Scottish actress Marjorie MacIntyre and had four children with her: Alison (* 1934), Kristin (* 1936), Magnus (* 1942) and Andro (* 1944). After the wedding, the couple settled on the Orkneys.

At the beginning of the Second World War Linklater was brought to the Orkneys for the Royal Engineers . Later he was ordered to the War Office , where he u. a. published several propaganda papers on behalf of the Ministry of Information . In 1944 he was transferred to the British military command in Italy and stayed there until the end of the war.

Between 1945 and 1948 Linklater served as Rector of Aberdeen University, succeeding Richard Stafford Cripps . In 1947 he and his family settled in Hill of Fearn ( Ross-shire ).

Eric Linklater died in Aberdeen on November 7th 1974 and was buried in Harray Cemetery on Mainland, Orkney .
