The Auto-, Motor- und Radfahrerbund Österreichs (short ARBÖ after the early name Arbeiter-Radfahrer-Bund Österreichs ) is an Austrian traffic club that represents motorist issues as an NGO. With around 420,000 members, it is the second largest association of its kind in Austria (after the ÖAMTC ). It was founded in Vienna on April 30, 1899 as the Association of Workers 'Cyclists' Associations in Austria and has developed into a service organization for members over the following decades. The ARBÖ is a founding member of the Association of European Automobile Clubs (EAC) based in Brussels. The ARBÖ is a central association within the social democratic apron organization ASKÖ . He is a member of the EAC European Automobile Club .

history

After the first Viennese cycling association ("Die Biene") had been founded in 1893, further associations followed, which finally merged on April 30, 1899 to form the "Association of Austrian Cycling Associations". After several name changes (1926: “Arbeiter-Radfahrer-Bund Österreichs”, 1932: “Arbeiter-Rad- und Kraftfahrer-Bund Österreichs”) and the creation of a motorized section, the name finally changed to the current one in 1962 due to the increasing motorization of the club members Name "Auto-, Motor- und Radfahrerbund Österreichs" changed. The association was banned in 1934 and re-established in 1945.

The ARBÖ breakdown service can be reached under the short number 123 throughout Austria. The Austrian road network is looked after by 450 of its own technicians. The aim of the ARBÖ breakdown helpers is to continue driving with their own vehicle.

Furthermore, the ARBÖ provides services in vehicle technology issues throughout Austria such as B. § 57a assessments ( sticker reviews ) , purchase test, seasonal test, etc. in its currently 93 test centers.

Additional product safety pass

With the additional product ARBÖ security pass, members can extend the ARBÖ protection to Europe in the geographical sense as well as the Canary Islands, Iceland and Madeira. The ARBÖ safety pass contains 28 services, including breakdown service abroad, towing service abroad, health insurance with repatriation at home and abroad.

Information service

The ARBÖ operates its own information service for traffic and tourism, which among other things supplies the ORF Teletext with traffic reports and snow values ​​and bathing lake temperatures (pages 431 and 432, 614, 615).

Members

The ARBÖ officially had 400,000 members in 2018, although according to Kurier Insider there are only 330,000 members. Also based on the official figures, the number of members has decreased by 50,000 since 2000, while the ÖAMTC has grown from 1.4 million to 2.1 million members in the same period.
