Carl Wilhelm Samuel Aurivillius

Carl Wilhelm Samuel Aurivillius , also Karl Vilhelm Samuel Aurivillius (born August 31, 1854 in the parish of Forsa, today part of the Hudiksvall community ; † December 16, 1899 in Munich ), was a Swedish zoologist .

Aurivillius was the son of Provost Erik Vilhelm Aurivillius and his wife Kristina Lovisa (née Forssell). His brother was Per Olof Christopher Aurivillius . After graduating from high school in Hudiksvall, he studied at Uppsala University from 1872 , received his doctorate in 1883 and became a lecturer in zoology. From 1893 he was a member of the Swedish Hydrographic Commission. In 1891 he went on a research trip that took him to Sumatra, Java and the East Indies. Since the Indian climate brought him health problems, he returned home. From 1892 to 1894 he gave public lectures at Uppsala University. Be dealt in detail with the lower marine fauna, studied the biology of crustaceans and coral animals and their systematics, and wrote extensively on plankton . As a connoisseur of the Nordic plankton fauna, he participated in the Swedish expeditions of the Hydrographic Commission to the fjords of the Skagerrak and Bohuslän in the 1890s to study plankton in different seasons and the relationship between ocean currents and composition.

Together with his brother, he partially translated and edited a Swedish edition of the last volume of Brehm's Thierleben - fish, crawling animals, amphibians and invertebrates .

Aurivillius was not married.
