Gustav Tauschek

Gustav Tauschek (born April 29, 1899 in Vienna , † February 14, 1945 in Zurich ) was an Austrian pioneer of information technology and developed numerous improvements for the calculating machines based on punched cards from 1922 to 1945 . One of his inventions is the now historical drum store .

From 1926 to 1930 he worked for the Rheinische Metallwaren- and machine factory in Sömmerda , where he developed a complete punch cards - accounting - system , which was never produced in series. The prototype is now in the collection of the Technical Museum in Vienna . After the Rheinische Metall- und Maschinenfabrik founded a subsidiary for the development of punched card machines, Rheinmetall Lochkarten GmbH, in the spring of 1928, it was bought by IBM that same year to secure its monopoly position . Tauschek received a five-year contract and sold a total of 169 patents to IBM.

Tauschek died of an embolism on February 14, 1945 in a Zurich hospital .

In 1964, Tauschekgasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him. Since April 1, 2012 there is a Gustav-Tauschek-Straße in the southeast of Erfurt (Research and Industry Center Southeast) .
