Maruyama Kaoru ( Japanese 丸山 薫 ; * June 8, 1899 , † October 21, 1974 ) was a Japanese writer.

Life

The son of a high-ranking civil servant often changed his place of residence due to his father's occupation in his childhood. A harbor tour in Yokohama in 1911 aroused his enthusiasm for the sea, which became a central theme of his later works. Hoping for a career as a ship's captain, he began training at the Maritime Trade Academy in 1918, but was not able to cope with the physical demands.

He studied French literature in Kyoto from 1921 and studied at Tokyo University from 1926 . Under the influence of the works of Edgar Allan Poes , Oscar Wilde and Hagiwara Sakutarō , he had already decided on a career as a writer at that time. In 1932 his first volume of poetry, Ho - Rampu - Kanome, was published . As the author of the Shiki magazine , he first came into contact with the literary circles of Tokyo.

Two more volumes of poetry appeared in 1935. For the second, Yōnen , he received the Bungei Hanron Poetry Prize . In 1941 he was invited to take part as a correspondent on a training trip for midshipmen to China. He reflected on the experiences of this trip in the volume of poetry Tenshō naru Tokoro .

Japan's entry into the war interrupted Maruyama's literary career. From 1945 to 1948 he lived in northern Japan. Then he settled in Toyohashi , the hometown of his wife Takai Miyoko ( 高井 三四 子 ), where he worked as a lecturer for modern Japanese literature and published his last large volumes of poetry.
