Maria Felchlin
Maria Felchlin (born June 18, 1899 in Olten ; † November 12, 1987 there ) was a Swiss doctor and the first practicing doctor in the canton of Solothurn, as well as a champion for women's suffrage .
Life
After graduating from the Aarau Cantonal School , Felchlin studied medicine at the Universities of Zurich and Kiel . She received her doctorate in 1926 from the ophthalmologist Alfred Vogt in Zurich. From 1929 she practiced as a doctor in Olten. During the Second World War Felchlin served as first lieutenant in the air raid troops.
As a member of the Free Democratic Party , she campaigned for the introduction of women's suffrage. She was active in numerous organizations, for example as President of the Swiss Working Group on Women and Democracy. In 1964 she founded the Dr. Ida Somazzi Foundation for the Advancement of Women and donated the Ida Somazzi Prize .
In addition, she was also active as a writer for various newspapers and for the Oltner Neujahrsblätter . In 1972 Felchlin was the first woman to be awarded the Culture Prize of the Canton of Solothurn.
Felchlin collected Matzendorfer dishes from the Thal district in Solothurn and wrote scientific articles about them. In return, the Matzendorf community granted her honorary citizenship. In 1968 she donated her collection to the community. The material is exhibited as the Maria Felchlin collection near the Thaler Ceramics Museum. The main part of the collection is made up of Biedermeier faience from the 19th century.
