Gustav Aufhammer

Gustav Aufhammer (born February 22, 1899 in Larrieden , Bavaria , † January 26, 1988 in Freising ) was a German crop scientist and plant breeder .

Live and act

Gustav Aufhammer, son of the teacher Johann Aufhammer, studied agriculture at the Technical University of Munich from 1919 and obtained the title of qualified farmer in 1922. A predominantly practical activity brought him into close contact with plant breeding. In 1926 he returned to the Technical University of Munich. There he did his doctorate under the aegis of Ludwig Kießling with a dissertation on the interrelationships between plant breeding and agricultural technology .

After receiving his doctorate, Aufhammer worked as a research assistant for Kießling on a variety register of cultivated forms of barley . The most important result of these studies was the " Picture Atlas on Malting Barley ", published together with Kießling in 1931 . After completing this activity in the field of cultivar science, Aufhammer went to the district arable farming school in Triesdorf for several years . In 1936 he took over the management of the wheat department of the Bavarian State Plant Breeding Institute in Weihenstephan. Here he was mainly concerned with the breeding combination of yield, resistance and quality properties in grain. In close cooperation with the relevant research institutes in Berlin and Detmold, he developed the system, which was later introduced in Germany, of assigning wheat varieties to specific baking quality groups (A, B and C wheat).

In 1949, Aufhammer accepted an appointment at the Technical University of Munich . As a full professor and director, he took over the Institute for Arable and Crop Production in Weihenstephan , which he headed until his retirement in 1968. The cereal and cereal breeding were henceforth equal weight in the center of his research. It was a particular concern for him to counteract the spread of plant diseases through plant cultivation measures. He published a detailed overview of the research work carried out in his institute (1963 name changed to: Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding) in the “Bavarian Agricultural Yearbook”.

Of his more than 350 articles in scientific and practical journals, his thoughtful treatise on " Location research in crop science " (1966) should be emphasized from a plant cultivation point of view . His book “ Neuzeitlicher Getreidebau ” (1959) was conceived primarily for agricultural practice . His main scientific work is the 1973 together with Gerhard Fischbeck wrote book " grain. Production Technology and Utilization ”- a standard work in German-language specialist literature on grain cultivation. From 1964 to 1966, Aufhammer was first chairman of the Society for Crop Science . His son Walter Aufhammer followed in his footsteps .
