Walter Aufhammer

Walter Aufhammer (born September 30, 1938 in Munich ) is a German crop scientist . From 1977 to 2001 he taught special crop production at the University of Hohenheim .

Life path

Walter Aufhammer, son of Gustav Aufhammer , studied agriculture at the Technical University of Munich in Freising - Weihenstephan since 1959 . After graduating in 1962, he worked as a doctoral student at the then Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding in Stuttgart-Hohenheim . Under the aegis of Walther Brouwer , he received his doctorate in 1966 with a dissertation on the developmental physiology of winter barley . He then took on the position of a scientific assistant at the Institute for Crop Production at the University of Bonn . In 1974 he completed his habilitation there with a thesis on the influence of physiologically active substances on the yield formation of spring barley . In 1977 he followed a call to the University of Hohenheim . He took over the professorship for special crop production and worked here until his retirement in 2001.

Research and Teaching

Aufhammer's scientific life's work is characterized by three main research areas: analysis of systems for yield generation , production and utilization of grain crops and possible uses of biodiversity in agricultural crop production.

He has published several textbooks and handbooks on the results of his research. His most extensive work is the book " Getreide- und other Körnerfruchtarten " (1998), in which he not only describes the cultivation methods of cereals , pseudograins and grain crops , but also describes production goals, problems of yield generation and ways of minimizing environmental pollution in detail. His book “ Mixed cultivation of cereal and other grain crops ” (1999) is one of the outstanding works on biodiversity in crop production . In his two books “ Pseudogetreidearten ” (2000) and “ Rohstoff Getreide ” (2003) he carefully prepared and documented knowledge of plant cultivation and provided suggestions for current research.

Aufhammer has given a lot of thought to the objectives and tasks of a university course . Noteworthy considerations can be found in his most recent book “ A university study - what for ” (2007). Above all, it is about the goals that teachers and students want to achieve together and the demands that are made on both sides.

Aufhammer was managing director from 1982 to 1984 and first chairman from 1994 to 1996 of the Society for Crop Science . Particularly noteworthy is his committed involvement in the establishment of this society's specialist journal, the journal “Pflanzenbauwissenschaften”, which has been published by the Stuttgart publisher Eugen Ulmer since 1996. As editor he played a key role in shaping the scientific profile of this journal until 2000 . In 2010 the journal crop science was merged with the journal for cultivated plants. Aufhammer has been a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1994 and honorary professor at the Agricultural University in Prague-Suchdol since 1998 . The Society for Crop Science made him an honorary member in 2007 .
