Life

Karl Haushofer was the son of the landscape painter Max Haushofer and his wife Anna ("Nannerl"), née Dumbser (1819–1902), and the older brother of the economist Max Haushofer Jr. In the school year 1856/57, he left the German Stephansgymnasium at Prague Lesser side in the upper class of the Munich Maximiliansgymnasium (Abitur) He studied chemistry in Munich, Prague and Freiberg from 1857 and received his doctorate. phil. After two years of practical experience in the iron and steel industry, he completed his habilitation in 1865 as a private lecturer in mineralogy at the University of Munich. In 1868, when the technical university there was founded, he was appointed professor of mineralogy and metallurgy as the successor to the mineralogist Franz von Kobell . In 1889 he became director of the TH Munich and in 1892 a member of the top school council. He carried out investigations into asterism and the etched figures on calcite , which led to important results in the field of crystal physics , and studied the crystallographic relationships of many organic compounds and the decomposition of granite by water.

Karl Haushofer also published articles on art history, including for the journal of the Kunstgewerbeverein in Munich published by Georg Hirth . As an autodidactic painter and draftsman, he found his motifs primarily on the Chiemsee island of Frauenwörth and was one of the illustrators of the "Frauenwörther Künstlerchronik". Like his wife Mina (1845–1890), he was buried in the cemetery on the Frauenchiemsee island .
