Otto Meitinger

Otto Meitinger (born May 8, 1927 in Munich ; † September 9, 2017 ) was a German architect and monument conservator . From 1987 to 1995 he was President of the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Meitinger is the son of the Munich city planning officer Karl Meitinger . After high school he studied at the former Technical University of Munich architecture and was with a thesis on the architectural history of the Munich Residence doctorate . In 1953 he was appointed director of the residential building office and led the reconstruction of the Munich residence, which was almost completely destroyed during the war. Among other things, it is thanks to his efforts that the antiquarian shop , the “rich rooms”, the court chapel and the treasury were rebuilt. Just in time for the 800th anniversary of Munich in 1958, the Cuvilliéstheater could also be rebuilt , albeit in a different location. From 1963 he headed the construction department of the Max Planck Society .

In 1976 he was appointed full professor for design and preservation of monuments at the Technical University of Munich . In 1983 he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. In 1987 he was elected president of the university, which he remained until his retirement in 1995.

Meitinger was a member of numerous specialist committees, including a. at the German Academy for Urban Development, the Bavarian State Building Art Committee, the State Monument Council , the Selection Committee of the Bavarian State Foundation and the Hypo-Kulturstiftung as well as the Bavarian State Association for Homeland Care , the Board of Trustees of the Philip Morris Foundation and the Bavarian Club.

Meitinger founded the Meitinger Foundation together with his wife Erika Meitinger (1927–2012) and his sister Charlotte Meitinger to promote monument conservation projects.

He died at the age of 90.
