List of honorary citizens of Munich
In 1818 , the municipal edict granted the magistrate of the city of Munich the right to make honorary citizens who have made a great contribution to the welfare of the city . Since then, 53 people have received this honor. The honorary citizenships of Paul von Hindenburg , Franz Ritter von Epp , Franz Xaver Schwarz , Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring in connection with the Third Reich were revoked in 1946.
The honorary citizenship of the city of Munich is neither associated with special rights (except for free use of public transport in Munich and the use of the hall in the old town hall ) nor with special obligations.
The general assembly of the city council decides on the award in a closed session. Any person can be awarded honorary citizenship regardless of whether they live in Munich. A posthumous award is excluded.
