Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria (born August 9, 1839 in Possenhofen ; † November 30, 1909 in Kreuth ) was a well-known German ophthalmologist and the father-in-law of the Belgian King Albert I and the Bavarian Crown Prince Rupprecht .

Life

Carl Theodor was a son of Maximilian Herzog in Bavaria and the Bavarian king's daughter Ludovika . His sister Elisabeth was married to the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I , another sister, Marie , to King Franz II of the Two Sicilies , the youngest, Sophie , to the French Duke Ferdinand von Alencon .

At the age of 14 he joined the Bavarian Army and eventually became General of the Cavalry . In 1870/71 he took part in the Franco-German War on the staff of the Saxon Duke . After retiring from active service he decided to study at the Ludwig-Maximilians University , initially in the subjects philosophy , law and economics , and finally in specialized medicine , which he in 1880 with the state examination and subsequent promotion to Dr. med. completed. He then sat in at Arlt in Vienna and Horner in Zurich around 1882 . For fifteen years he practiced alternately in Munich , in the Tegernsee district hospital and in Meran .

In 1875 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1895 he and his second wife Marie José bought a piece of land on Nymphenburger Strasse and founded the private eye clinic Herzog Carl Theodor in Munich. In the first fourteen years of the clinic's existence, he performed more than 5,000 cataract operations and advised and treated other eye diseases.

Duke Carl Theodor was buried in the family crypt in Tegernsee Castle. His widow transferred the clinic to a foundation in 1917, and Duke Carl Theodor's previous assistant Heinrich Zenker became the medical director.

In his first marriage, Duke Carl Theodor was married to his first and third cousin, Princess Sophie of Saxony (1845–1867), daughter of King John I of Saxony . From the marriage a daughter emerged:

In his second marriage in 1874 he married the Infanta Marie José of Portugal (1857–1943), daughter of King Michael I of Portugal . There were five children from this marriage:

honors and awards

Since 1895, Duke Carl Theodor was the eponymous regiment owner of the Royal Bavarian 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment "Duke Karl Theodor" . The regiment kept this name after his death in 1909 until it was dissolved in 1919.
