Marie Gabriele in Bavaria
Marie Gabriele Duchess in Bavaria (born October 9, 1878 in Tegernsee ; † October 24, 1912 in Sorrento , Italy ; full name Marie Gabriele Mathilde Isabelle Therese Antoinette Sabine) was a Bavarian princess and, by marriage, the last Bavarian Crown Princess.
Life
Marie Gabriele was born as the third daughter of Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria and his second wife Maria José of Portugal . On her father's side she was a niece of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary ( Sisi ). She grew up with two sisters and two brothers mainly in Possenhofen and had a happy childhood. The princess was raised very simply, but especially her father, who made a name for himself as an ophthalmologist, encouraged her artistic inclination in drawing early on.
She married the Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria , son of King Ludwig III. of Bavaria and the Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este , on July 10, 1900 in Munich . After the wedding, the couple settled in Bamberg . It traveled often. In 1903, Marie Gabriele and her husband went on a tour that took them to India , China and Japan , among others ; they returned via the United States . The trip was of a scientific nature and the couple was accompanied by a well-known professor from the University of Munich . In Japan, however, Marie Gabriele fell seriously ill, was operated on for appendicitis on her return to Bavaria and recovered completely.
Marie Gabriele met many blows of fate. In 1903, their daughter Irmingard died of diphtheria at the age of just seven months . In the same year she became pregnant again, but the little girl was born still . Shortly before her death, the youngest son Rudolf died of diabetic shock . Only her son Albrecht reached adulthood, because after the outbreak of the First World War, the eldest son Luitpold fell ill with polio and died at the age of only 13.
Marie Gabriele did not live to see this anymore: She died in Sorrento in October 1912 at the age of 34 of a kidney disease. She was buried in the crypt of the Theatinerkirche in Munich with her deceased children.
In 1914, the Princess Rupprecht Home in Swakopmund was named in her honor .
