geography
Straßenheim is located on the northeastern Mannheim city limits along a single thoroughfare, the local road . It borders in the north on the Hessian Viernheim , in the east on Heddesheim and in the west on the Mannheim districts Vogelstang and Wallstadt. history
In 903 , Straßenheim was first mentioned as Strazheim in the Lorsch Codex . The place name goes back to the location on the old Roman road Mainz – Worms – Ladenburg – Neuenheim. A basilica was built in 1141, making it the oldest church in Mannheim. The territorial sovereignty was disputed between the Electoral Palatinate and the Hochstift Worms . In 1802 the place was occupied by Hessian troops, a year later he came to Baden during an exchange of territory . For the first time, a staff holder was used, which also exercised the office of Hubschultheissen. The local police rights were transferred to Heddesheim in 1833. In 1905 the water tower was built.
The Baden municipal code of 1921 stipulated that all separate districts should be connected to their main locations. Therefore, in 1928, the Ministry of the Interior decided that Straßenheim should be incorporated into Heddesheim . Against this resistance arose in the village; In 1930 the connection to Mannheim could be achieved. In 1984 the rider's squadron of the Mannheim Police Headquarters, which has been part of the Bruchsal Police Headquarters since 2014 , was based in a courtyard in Strassenheim. In 1989, plans of the city administration were announced that the surrounding fields should be built on extensively and that Straßenheim with its own tram connection should be rededicated to a full-fledged district. After violent protests, the local council dropped the project in 1990.
