Lichtenau is a district of the Upper Bavarian community Weichering . Until it was incorporated on May 1, 1978, it formed an independent municipality, initially in the district of Neuburg an der Donau and from May 5, 1973 in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen . The hamlet of Lichtenheim also belongs to the district .

history

At the time of the Christian mission in Bavaria in the 7th century, Lichtenau was the presumed location of a baptistery , which was assigned to a church in what is now Ingolstadt's Hundszell district ; this is indicated by the still preserved patronage of the village church of St. Johannes Baptist . However, so far no conclusive archaeological traces have been secured either from the early medieval chapel in Lichtenau or from the mission church in Hundszell .

Lichtenau was first mentioned in a document in 1197, when Emperor Heinrich VI. gave the place to his Reichshofmarschall Heinrich von Kalden as a gift as part of the Pappenheimer Urbar . In 1332 it was given to Ludwig von Reichertshofen again through a gift, this time Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria . The incorporation to Weichering took place on May 1, 1978.

The former municipality of Lichtenau had an area of 10.2497 km².

On the cut-off date of the census on May 25, 1987, the former municipality of Lichtenau had a population of 668, of which 633 were in the church village of Lichtenau and 35 in the hamlet of Lichtenheim.

In the historic center in the north of Lichtenau is the Roman Catholic Benefice Church of St. Johannes Baptist , which was first mentioned in a document in 1432. With the exception of the medieval gable roof tower, the church had to be rebuilt in 1927 due to a lack of space according to plans by Michael Kurz . It is a remarkable example of rural sacred architecture from the interwar period. During the renovation in 2004/08, the original, brightly colored room setting was restored and the choir mosaic created in the 1950s by Michael P. Weingartner was removed . The contemporary furnishings based on plans by Kurz have been almost completely preserved. A sacrament niche made of stone , which was moved from the interior of the tower to the north wall of the choir in 1959, reminds of the late Gothic furnishings .

Immediately south of the church is the old school (1904) and the former beneficiary's house , a simple hipped roof building from the second half of the 18th century.
