Wilhelm von Beetz (born March 27, 1822 in Berlin , †  January 22, 1886 in Munich ) was a German physicist .

Career

He was the youngest son of the geography teacher at the Berlin Cadet Corps Friedrich Beetz. From 1840 he studied physics and chemistry at the Physiological University in Berlin. Then he was initially a private lecturer in Berlin . From 1843 he was a physics teacher in the cadet house and assistant to Magnus. In 1849 he completed his habilitation and from 1850 was professor of physics at the cadet corps and at the artillery and engineering school in Berlin. In 1855 he went to Bern as a professor and in 1858 to Erlangen .

In 1845 Beetz was instrumental in founding the Physical Society . In 1868 Beetz finally became a professor at the Technical University of Munich . Since 1872 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1873 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy . From 1874 to 1877 he was director of the Polytechnic and received personal nobility in 1876 . He had been a member of the Munich Casual Society since 1870 . In 1874 he and Klein pushed through the appointment of Alexander von Brill as a mathematics professor against the resistance of the old, influential director Carl Maximilian Bauernfeind. His main field of work was electricity, where he was particularly interested in conduction processes and improved numerous physical apparatus. He studied the conductivity of liquids and confirmed that it increases with temperature.
