Hans Hirtz (or Hirtze ) was a German late Gothic painter on the Upper Rhine . He was active on the Upper Rhine around 1420, for example in Strasbourg . He is still recognized as an outstanding artist in sources from the 16th century. It is believed that Hans Hirtz was the painter of the Karlsruhe Passion tablets and can therefore be identified with their originator, who was named Master of the Karlsruhe Passion .

By Hans Hirtz life data is only known that he was in Strasbourg 1421-1463. He died before 1466, the year his widow is mentioned.

The widow of Hans Hirtz married the glass painter Peter Hemmel von Andlau , who also worked in Strasbourg .

Master of the Karlsruhe Passion?

Hans Hirtz is said to be identical with the master of the Karlsruhe Passion , an important representative of the Upper Rhine late Gothic. Six panels of the Passion Altar from around 1440, known as the Karlsruhe Passion, are now kept in the State Art Gallery in Karlsruhe under the attribution of Master of the Karlsruhe Passion (Hans Hirtz?) . Another panel, The Capture of Christ , belongs to the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne . The pictures are counted among the most important works of late medieval panel painting in Germany.
