Christine Hardt
Christine Hardt was a German housewife and inventor . In 1899 she registered the first German patent for a woman's bodice as a breast carrier with the Imperial Patent Office and is therefore considered to be one of the inventors of the brassiere .
Life
Little is known about the life of Christine Hardt. The Dresden woman was a teacher of therapeutic gymnastics and worked as a masseuse for the doctor and sanatorium operator Heinrich Lahmann.
Invention of the brassiere
On September 5, 1899, Christine Hardt from Dresden registered with the Imperial Patent Office a “woman's body as a breast carrier”. In patent specification no. 110888 she describes the structure and function of the bodice, which consisted of handkerchiefs and men's suspenders tied together: "The main purpose of this bodice is to keep the breasts upright without impairing the function of a healthy breast in any way."
Both breast containers and straps were adjustable and could be adjusted to the size of the breast. This was to avoid harmful pressure on the chest organs, as was the case with restrictive corsets . Christine Hardt's invention is still recognized today as a forerunner of modern bras and as a contribution to the women's movement .
