Reinhard Freiherr von Koenig-Fachsenfeld (born March 19, 1899 in Stuttgart ; † March 9, 1992 ) was a German engineer , inventor , automobile and motorcycle racer .

Life

Baron Reinhard Koenig-Fachsenfeld was born in Stuttgart in 1899 as the son of Baron Franz Koenig-Fachsenfeld. He attended high school in Stuttgart and then studied at the TH Stuttgart . As a racing driver, he won motorcycle and car races . In 1924 the man from Stuttgart became the first German motorcycle road champion in history on a Cotton in the 250 cm³ class . In 1925, Solitude won the race and broke speed records. Motivated by this, he dealt intensively with vehicle aerodynamics. In the late 1920s he took over the German representative office from Paul Jaray , who in 1922 had applied for the first, fundamental patents on vehicle aerodynamics . At the beginning of the 1930s he turned away from Jaray and started his own research on vehicle aerodynamics in conjunction with the FKFS in Stuttgart. As part of this work, he designed a number of racing and record and test vehicles. In addition, he designed streamlined bodies for sedans, which were placed on chassis from renowned manufacturers.

His greatest success was the streamlined design of the Mercedes SSKL , which was realized by the well-known coachbuilder Vetter in Cannstatt . It was with this vehicle that Manfred von Brauchitsch won the AVUS in Berlin in 1932. Under his leadership, a streamlined car based on a Maybach SW 38 was created, which the tire manufacturer Fulda commissioned from the established bodywork forge Dörr und Schreck in Frankfurt. This car with a sports body was used for tire tests at Fulda and, thanks to the streamlined body, reached a top speed of 200 km / h even then. The car has been missing since the war.

Through his research he was the owner of numerous patents .

In 1982 Baron Reinhard von Koenig-Fachsenfeld founded the Fachsenfeld Castle Foundation . A permanent exhibition at Schloss Fachsenfeld gives an insight into his fundamental work in the field of vehicle aerodynamics.
