Erik Aaes

Erik Aaes (born April 27, 1899 in Nordby , Denmark , † March 19, 1966 in Charlottenlund , Denmark) was a Danish production designer .

Life

After Erik Aaes attended the Danish Naval School, he became a stage designer at Folketeatret in Copenhagen during the First World War . At the same time he worked as assistant production designer for the Danish film company Nordisk . In 1921 he worked under Svend Gade for the German production of Hamlet with Asta Nielsen in the title role. Erik Aaes stayed in other European countries from then on. He achieved his breakthrough as a production designer in France . There he created the decorations for poetic and atmospheric films by Alberto Cavalcanti and Jean Renoir .

At the beginning of the sound film era, Erik Aaes returned to his home country in 1933. From 1935 he was led as a film architect. Except for work for the director Carl Theodor Dreyer , it was only used in average entertainment films. In 1959 and 1960 he worked on the first three German Edgar Wallace films that were shot in the studios in Copenhagen. Only towards the end of his career did Aaes work for innovative young Danish directors such as Jörn Donner , Palle Kjaerulff-Schmidt and Henning Carlsen. Carlsen was also the director of his last film work Hunger .

Erik Aaes has a daughter who works as a costume designer for film.
