Day of vengeance is a Danish film drama by Carl Theodor Dreyer from the year 1943 . The literary film adaptation is based on the play Anne Pedersdotter by Hans Wiers-Jenssen , which in turn was inspired by the historical case of Anne Pedersdotter .

action

In 1623 the old woman Herlofs Marte was accused of witchcraft in a Danish town . She escapes to Pastor Absalon's house, where his young wife Anne hides her in the attic. There she is found by her captors. Her process, including the embarrassing interrogation by means of torture , is led by Absalon, who wants to save her soul with her confession and brings her to the stake .

A secret love affair develops between Martin, the just returned son of Absalon, and Anne. Absalon's mother Merete hates Anne, she suspects the emotional bond between the two and warns her grandson, but he cannot let go of Anne. Anne imagines how wonderful it would be to live together if Absalon were dead. Absalon returns shortly afterwards from visiting a dying man and Anne reveals to him the relationship with Martin. Absalon, who married her as a child without her will, dies of a heart attack.

At the coffin, Merete accuses Anne of killing Absalon using witchcraft. After Martin turns away from her and takes Merete's side, Anne confesses “what she did”.

criticism
