Preben Lerdorff Rye (born May 23, 1917 in Rudkøbing , Denmark, † June 15, 1995 in Denmark) was a Danish actor.

life and career

Preben Lerdorff Rye was born in 1917 in the village of Rudkøbing on the Danish island of Langeland . His parents were the machine salesman Ernst Oluf Rye and the housewife Signe Voldborg Hansen. Rye began his stage acting career in the late 1930s, first at the Odense Theater between 1938 and 1940 . Later he was a member of the Danish State Theater in Copenhagen for over two decades before returning to the Odense Theater in the 1960s.

In 1941 Rye made his film debut in Aunt Cramers Testamente and subsequently appeared in numerous film productions. In 1943 he had a major role in Carl Theodor Dreyer's film drama Day of Vengeance (1943), which takes place during the witch burnings in Denmark in the 17th century. Twelve years later Rye stood again for Dreyer in his faith drama The Word in front of the camera. In it, Rye played an obviously crazy man who thinks himself to be Jesus of Nazareth and is laughed at by his fellow men for it. In the 1950s, the great actor, who is bearded in most of his films, twice won the most important Danish film award, Bodil, in the Best Actor category : in 1951 for I gabestokken and in 1959 for En Fremdmed banker på . From the 1960s he also appeared in front of the camera for several television productions in Denmark.

Rye took on a late role as a captain, who is one of the members of a religious community, in Gabriel Axel's Oscar-winning film Babettes Fest from 1987. He also took on supporting roles in The Element of Crime (1984) and Medea (1988), two early works by Lars from Trier . Preber Lerdoff Rye retired from film acting in the late 1980s and died in 1995 at the age of 78. Shortly before his death he was interviewed for Carl Th. Dreyer - minmetier , a documentary about Carl Theodor Dreyer.
