occupation

Medea is a Danish drama film directed by Lars von Trier for Danish television in 1988. In the 1960s, Carl Theodor Dreyer , who was very much admired by Trier, was in negotiations with MGM to film the antique Medea fabric by Euripides with Maria Callas and in color. He renounced after Callas for the same role in Medea by Pier Paolo Pasolini had promised. Dreyer's script took over from Trier with a few changes. He shows Medea as a suffering woman.

action

Medea, her husband Jason and their two young sons live in exile in Corinth , the kingdom of King Creon . Jason has the opportunity to gain more power by marrying young Glauke, daughter of Creon. Medea, who sacrificed herself for her great love Jason, feels betrayed.

Since Creon knows about Medea's magic, he shows her out of his realm. The outcast gives Glauke her bridal crown, the teeth of which she has poisoned; in fact, the recipient is injured and dies. In order to hit Jason as hard as possible, she kills her two children. The older boy helps her hang his brother and then puts a noose around his neck. Jason discovers the two hanged children and rides around desperately until he drops dead. Medea escapes on Ageus' ship.
