occupation

You should honor your wife is a Danish silent film that Carl Theodor Dreyer made in 1925 after the play Sturz des Tyrannen (Tyrannens Fald, 1919) by the playwright and screenwriter Svend Rindom . The satirical everyday drama depicts the conversion of a despotic husband to a sociable model husband. The main roles were cast with the popular Danish actors Johannes Meyer , Astrid Holm and Mathilde Nielsen. The film was photographed by George Schnéevoigt and produced by A / S Dansk Filmindustrie Palladium .

action

The hero of the film is Viktor, a true domestic tyrant, who takes out his professional failures on his wife and daughter, whom he humiliates at every opportunity. When he goes too crazy with pedantry and a notoriously bad mood, Mads, his former nanny, takes matters into her own hands and unceremoniously sends Viktor's wife Ida to rest with her mother. The household is reorganized: Viktor now has to take care of all the chores that he previously entrusted to his wife and daughter. He learns, albeit reluctantly, in a sort of made-up parenting process, to wash the dishes, wash clothes, change the baby and shine the shoes. But above all, he learns to appreciate what his wife has done for him so far. When she comes back he is lambing pious. And he is also getting his feet on the ground again at work.

background

The A / S Dansk Filmindustrie Palladium plant is 2,430 meters long. At 20 fps, that's about 107 minutes of running time.

The film premiered on October 5, 1925. It was distributed in the Danish original version Du Skal ære din hustru for the Scandinavian market and in a version with English subtitles as Master of the House for international distribution. The film was shown in France under the title Maître du logis . The different versions have different lengths.

Du Skal ære din hustru was one of Dreyer's few commercial successes. The fact that the film was particularly well received in France made it possible for Dreyer to shoot The Passion of the Maid of Orléans (La passion de Jeanne d'Arc) there in 1928 , which is now one of the most important cinematographic works in all of film history.

The material was made as a sound film in 1942 by the Danish director Jon Iversen .

In Germany , the film was not shown publicly until March 28, 1972 on television by ZDF with musical accompaniment by the composer Hans Jönsson (1913-1993).

The digital restoration of the film on the basis of the nitro negative was carried out in 2010 by the Danish production company 'Palladium' and the Danish Film Institute in Copenhagen.

New music version

After Hans Jönsson had already composed a new music to accompany Du Shall Your Wife for ZDF in the 1970s, the Berlin composer Sabine Worthmann (double bass), born in 1959, created her own musical illustration for the film in 2012 and played it together with the musicians Susanne Paul (Cello), Silke Eberhard (clarinets), Leonid Soybelman (guitar) and Michael Griener (percussion). The ARTE cultural channel broadcast the recording of this performance on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 10.55 p.m.

Republication

The film was released on DVD by Arthaus Filmvertrieb in April 2009 . It was discussed by José Garcia at textezumfilm.de: "A tyrannical father who ventures his professional difficulties and disappointments on his wife and children and disregards the self-sacrificing work of his wife is cured by a family conspiracy".

Individual evidence

  1. cf. Message from dvd-forum.at : Kinowelt had the Danish film “You should honor your wife” from 1925 examined in a long version by the FSK. The old German version, which was shown on Premiere, for example, runs for about 77 minutes. The British DVD version runs for about 92 minutes. However, the FSK gives a running time of 107 minutes when the film is entered, which would mean that the film will be 30 minutes longer than on the premiere and 15 minutes longer than on the British DVD.
