John of Compsa
Johannes von Compsa , also Johannes von Conza , Latin Ioannes Compsinus (* probably in Conza della Campania ; † 617 in Naples ) was a late antique rebel in southern Italy .
In 615 the Eastern Roman exarch in Italy, John of Ravenna , was overthrown and killed by insurgents. The still of Emperor Phocas used Dux of Naples, John of Compsa, joined the rebellion. Emperor Herakleios , whose military forces were almost completely tied up by the Persian War , installed Eleutherius in 616 as a new exarch with the task of suppressing the uprising in Italy. John then declared the ducat Naples to be independent of the emperor. Eleutherius took the city after a siege of several weeks in 617 and had Johannes beheaded as a usurper .
