action

Christiania in 1890: the penniless and lonely writer Pontus moved from the country to the city. Emaciated from hunger, he puts his vest at the pawnbroker's. The little money he receives, however, he gives away to a beggar. He also passes on any other money he gets. When the editor of a newspaper offers the young Pontus to print an article of his slightly corrected, the latter refuses too proudly. He begins to beg food for his dog and loses his apartment. From now on he sleeps on park benches. Overwhelmed by hunger, he can no longer distinguish between reality and fantasy, but still tries to survive and wanders through the streets of the city. He suffers humiliations that lead him to the edge of madness. He is denied a job as an accountant, as well as that of a firefighter because he wears glasses. One of his hallucinations revolves around the beautiful Ylajali, a woman from the upper class, whom he meets on the street. However, a relationship between the two does not develop. Following a sudden inspiration, Pontus hires a ship's crew to leave Christiania. Where it takes him and what his intentions are remain hidden.

Reviews

“A masterful film adaptation, the subject of which, beyond personal fate, is the image of life and society at the turn of the century. Also impressive due to the acting performance of the main actor. "

“A film adaptation of the autobiographical novel by Knut Hamsun, which is particularly characterized by its loyalty to the milieu and outstanding acting achievements and must be seen as an interesting attempt to show the adaptation of literary works in new ways. Recommended from 18. "
