Anton Slodnjak

Anton Slodnjak (born June 13, 1899 in Bodkovci , Lower Styria , Austria-Hungary (today part of the Juršinci municipality , Slovenia ); † March 13, 1983 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav writer , editor , literary scholar and historian .

Life

Slodnjak studied after attending the humanistic grammar school (1912-1920) Slavic studies at the University of Ljubljana . In 1925 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Davorin Trstenjak . From 1925 to 1927 he studied on a scholarship at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków , where he was also a lecturer for the Slovenian language in the second year .

From 1927 to 1945 Slodnjak was professor for the Slovenian language at the Trgovska akademija (commercial academy) in Ljubljana. During World War II he was in the Osvobodilna Fronta active and therefore three times came in detention . From 1945 to 1947 he was head of the vocational training department in the Ministry of Trade and Supply. From 1947 he was a professor at the Slovenian Institute of the University of Zagreb , from 1950 professor of Slovenian literature at the Ljubljana Art Academy. From 1953 to 1959 he headed the Institute for Slavic Philology there.

Early retirement in 1959 for political reasons, he initially worked as an interpreter at the Goethe University in Frankfurt , where he held a visiting professorship from 1962 to 1965 . Then he returned to Yugoslavia.

Slodnjak is the author and editor of numerous studies, monographs and lexicographical works on Slovenian literature. His History of Slovene Literature , published in German in 1958, was for almost fifty years the only comprehensive account of Slovene literary history accessible in German. In addition to dramatic attempts that were not published, Slodnjak wrote three biographical novels about France Prešeren ( Neiztrohnjeno srce ), Fran Levstik ( Pogine naj - pes! ) And Ivan Cankar ( Tujec ).

For Pogine naj - pes! Slodnjak was awarded the Prešeren Prize in 1948 .
