Alexander Faltin

Alexander von Faltin ( Latvian : Aleksandrs Faltins ; born December 12 . Jul / 24. December  1819 . Greg in Libau ( Liepaja ), today Latvia , as Alexander Hermann Faltin , † 8. November 1899 in Wiesbaden ) was a Baltic German lawyer , liberal Politician , reformer and editor.

Life

After studying law at the Imperial University of Dorpat , Alexander Faltin joined the Courland High Court. From 1853 to 1881 he was Riga councilor and senior man of the Great Guild of Riga. In his book Ueber den advertisement evidence in Livonia (Riga 1857) Faltin opposed the use of torture. As Riga's delegate to the Central Justice Commission in 1864, Faltin spoke out in favor of a conviction on the basis of circumstantial evidence and thus played a decisive role in the abolition of torture in the Russian legal system.

From 1853 Faltin was director and from 1886 to 1894 president of the Riga- Dünaburger and the Riga- Tukumer Eisenbahn. Faltin was the inspiration for the construction of the Riga- Mitauer track. Furthermore, Faltin was a co-founder and co-editor of the Baltic Monthly , in which he mainly commented on political and economic issues.

In 1852 Faltin received the rank of college assessor and in 1858 the dark bronze medal in memory of the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856. In 1877 Faltin was granted hereditary honorary citizenship of Riga; In 1882 Faltin was raised to the Russian hereditary status by awarding the Order of St. Vladimir (entry in the governorate nobility register of Livonia on February 16, 1883).

Faltin's parents were the veterinarian in Libau, later in Riga, Johann Friedrich Leopold Faltin (* in (East) Prussia, † 1832 or 1833) and Baroness Juliane Dorothea von Vietinghoff called Scheel (* 1796 or 1797, † November 2, 1866 in Riga).

His brother was Rudolf Faltin .
