Wilhelm Albert Hugo Heinrich Grempler (born January 26, 1826 in Opatow, Kempen district in Posen , † January 8, 1907 in Breslau ) was a German prehistoric scientist .

Life

Wilhelm Grempler was born as the son of Heinrich Wilhelm Grempler and Augusta Wilhelmina Emilie Krause, began his medical studies at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , where he joined the Corps Borussia Greifswald in 1849 . He took his exams at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau , where he received his doctorate as Dr. med. 1853 as a general practitioner. During the German war he set up a hospital there. He was also in charge of a military hospital in Neunkirchen during the Franco-German War . He began to occupy himself with research on prehistory, was from 1884 to 1907 chairman of the association for the Museum of Silesian Antiquities ( renamed in 1906 to Schlesischer Altertumsverein ) and in 1886/87 he made the “ Sackrau Find ” (near Breslau). In 1889 he finally gave up his medical practice and devoted himself entirely to his studies. He went on major study trips every year and enriched the prehistoric collections in Berlin and Breslau. To support the Silesian Museum of Applied Arts and Antiquities in Wroclaw, which was set up on his initiative, he bequeathed his significant fortune of 300,000 marks to the city. The capital of the Wilhelm Grempler Foundation that resulted from this fell victim to the German inflation from 1914 to 1923 .

In 1899 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wroclaw on the occasion of the opening of the Silesian Museum of Applied Arts and Antiquities . On the golden anniversary of his doctorate in 1902, he was awarded the title of professor. He also received the character of a secret medical council. He was a member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Wroclaw Zoological Garden, Honorary President of the Association for the Museum of Silesian Antiquities (since 1902) and an honorary member of the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture , the Vienna Anthropological Society and the Netherlandish Society for Anthropology and antiquity (since 1894). For his 70th birthday, the sculptor Ernst Seger designed a medal with Grempler's bust.
