Georg Bender (born December 31, 1848 in Königsberg , Prussia , † February 4, 1924 in Breslau ) was a German local politician and long-time mayor of the city of Breslau .

Live and act

Georg Bender was born as the son of the manor owner and later member of the Prussian House of Representatives, Dr. phil. Karl Ludwig Bender (1811-1893) and Ida Bender, b. Cheese worm, born. After attending the old town high school in Königsberg , he studied law in Jena and Königsberg from 1868 to 1872 . In Jena in 1868 he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in the castle cellar . As a one-year volunteer , he took part in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 . In 1872 he became a trainee lawyer and in February 1878 a court assessor and, for a short time, a district judge in Marggrabowa in East Prussia . On November 1, 1878 he became city ​​councilor and syndic , in 1880 second and in 1888 first mayor of the city of Thorn in West Prussia . There he had a slaughterhouse , the Artus Court , an infirmary and an orphanage built. He arranged the Thorner Stadtarchiv and wrote some articles on the history of the town. When he left, he was made an honorary citizen .

From April 1, 1891 to September 30, 1912 he was Lord Mayor of Breslau and as such a member of the Prussian mansion . During his time as head of the city, many charitable buildings were built, such as the slaughterhouse and cattle yard (1896), two market halls (1908), the new urban aqueduct (1900), the electricity works (around 1900), the gas station (1907), the electrical one Tram (1893), electrification (1899) and urbanization (1911) of the former horse-drawn tram , the port (1901), the technical college (1910) as well as numerous green spaces and schools. During his tenure, the area of ​​Wroclaw increased through incorporations from 3000 to 5000 hectares . The population grew from 340,000 to 540,000. He reorganized the building industry and the building police (from 1900) and ensured the complete transformation of the public education and welfare system .

Bender was deputy chairman of the Silesian Provincial Parliament and the Provincial Committee as well as deputy chairman of the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture (later its honorary member); also honorary member of the Coppernicus Association for Science and Art in Thorn and member of numerous other scientific societies. In addition, he was a member of the Breslau District Synod from 1892 to 1915 , from which he was sent to the Silesian Provincial Synods from 1893 to 1908. In 1899 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wroclaw on the occasion of the opening of the Silesian Museum of Applied Arts and Antiquities . He later also became Dr. med. hc from the University of Wroclaw, Dr. Ing.hc of the Technical University of Wroclaw and honorary citizen of the city. A square in Breslau was named after him.

On December 29, 1878, he married Margarethe Konrad, with whom he had four daughters.
