Karl Masner

Karl Borromäus Masner (born January 22, 1858 in Preßburg , Austrian Empire , † May 14, 1936 in Breslau , Province of Lower Silesia ) was a German art historian and museum director .

Life

Karl Masner studied Classical Philology and Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there in 1885 under Otto Benndorf . From 1885 he worked at the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry in Vienna , for which he published several catalogs.

In 1899 Karl Masner was appointed director of the newly created Silesian Museum of Applied Arts and Antiquities in the city of Wroclaw. The previous institution, the Museum of Silesian Antiquities , was headed by Hans Seger . In 1901 Masner was able to win Erwin Hintze as a research assistant. From 1908 Masner was involved in the preparations for the 1913 Breslau Centenary Exhibition , which he curated to commemorate the Prussian Wars of Liberation against Napoleon .

In 1918 Masner also took over the Villa Neisser , where he set up the Albert and Toni Neisser municipal art collection . In 1925 he set up the castle museum in the Wroclaw City Palace. In 1926 Hintze took over the management. In 1929 he succeeded Masner as director of the three above-mentioned Wroclaw City Museums. As a retired museum director, Masner took over the management of the city museums in Breslau again after Hintze's death in August 1931. In 1933 Heinrich Kohlhaussen was appointed as his successor. This carried out a reorganization of the collections.

Karl Masner was the author of many publications on Silesian handicrafts and arts and crafts , and goldsmithing was one of his areas of interest . He was one of the employees of the Thieme-Becker reference work . In recognition of his scientific merits, he was made an Honorary Senator of the University of Wroclaw .
