Eduard Kaempffer (born May 13, 1859 in Münster , † March 22, 1926 in Obernigk , Silesia ) was a German painter , sculptor and medalist .

Life

From 1875 to 1880 he studied with Eduard von Gebhardt and Peter Janssen at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1880 to 1881 he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he studied painting technique with Ludwig von Löfftz and Anton Seitz . Then he lived again in Düsseldorf in the house of the widow of the painter Eduard Schoenfeld .

He spent 1885 in Rome, supported by the Rome Prize of the Abraham Wetter Foundation in Düsseldorf. In 1887 he received a grant from the Abraham Wetter Foundation for the design of the altarpiece Flagellation of Christ in the Martin Luther Church in Bad Neuenahr , which he created for the Rhineland and Westphalia art association . Back in Munich from 1891, he was appointed to the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Wroclaw in 1895 , where he worked as a teacher of natural drawing and figure painter until 1924. In 1893, 1894 and 1895 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Kaempffer was the teacher of Willibald Besta , Max Friese , Erich Kittmann , Oskar Obier , Paul Plontke , Robert Karl Pollog , Rudolf Priebe , Georg Wichmann and Carl Bantzer , with whom he was friends. He was involved in the Willingshausen painters' colony .

Kaempffer's most important work is his cycle of paintings in the stairwell of the town hall of Erfurt , which he created from 1889 to 1896. In exemplary scenes, he describes the Tannhauser legend , the Faust legend, the legend of the Count von Gleichen and his two wives and Martin Luther's years in Erfurt .

As a sculptor, he created some small bronzes from 1899 ("Tigress with Young", "Sieger", "Wedding Medal"), later sculptures are "Salome", "Bacchant with Panther", "Pegasus" and "Lamentation of Christ".
