Albert Voss

Albert Franz Ludwig Voss (born April 24, 1837 in Fritzow , Cammin district , † July 19, 1906 in Berlin ) was a German prehistoric scientist .

Live and act

Albert Voß attended the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin until 1856 , studied medicine with Rudolf Virchow at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin from 1856 to 1859 , received his doctorate in 1860 with Otto Lehnerdt and G. Bremme and settled in Berlin in 1862 as a doctor . In 1868 he began his first prehistoric studies with Virchow and undertook excavations in Pomerania. He took part as an assistant doctor in the German War in 1866 and in the Franco-German War in 1870/71. In November 1870 he became a field staff doctor of the 3rd Jäger Battalion. After returning from the war, he devoted himself exclusively to prehistory. In 1874 Voss joined the museum service, first as an unskilled worker for the Nordic Antiquities Collection , where he had been Adolf Bastian's assistant to the director since 1876 . In 1886 he became department director of the collection of patriotic and other prehistoric antiquities of the Royal Museum of Ethnology . From 1874 to 1906 he increased the collection from 12,000 to over 100,000 numbers. In 1869 he was co-founder and secretary of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory , since 1880 a member of the Leopoldina , since 1884 an honorary member of the Niederlausitz Society for Anthropology and Antiquity and since 1887 a corresponding member of the Vienna Anthropological Society. From 1888 to 1900 he was deputy chairman of the Association for the Museum of German Folk Costumes and Home Crafts (later incorporated in the Museum of European Cultures ). In 1889 he was given the status of a secret councilor.

Albert Voss was born with Adelheid Voss. Schmidt married.

Since 1857 he was a member of the Corps Nassovia Würzburg .

Writings and works

With Virchow, Voss was editor of the news about German antiquities . (15 volumes, Asher, Berlin 1890–1905). In addition, from 1897 to 1902 he co-edited the communications from the Museum for German Folk Costumes and Domestic Products in Berlin and published the following works in addition to articles in the negotiations of the Berlin Anthropological Society:
