Emil Engelmann (local history researcher)

Emil Karl August Engelmann (born February 25, 1861 in Guben ; † 1945 ) was a German teacher and local researcher.

Life

Emil Engelmann was born as the son of the innkeeper Eduard Engelmann and attended grammar school in Guben, where he obtained his school-leaving certificate in 1881 . Then studied classical philology , history and philosophy in Berlin . On February 13, 1886, with a thesis on the right of the popes to be confirmed and approved in the German royal elections from 1077 to 1378, he became Dr. phil. PhD . On December 14, 1886, he passed the exam pro facultate docendi . At Easter 1887 he entered the Königliche Kaiser Wilhelms-Realgymnasium in Berlin as a test subject and remained there as an assistant teacher until Easter 1891. Then he went to the newly founded Royal Prince Heinrichs-Gymnasium in Schöneberg , to which he belonged until Easter 1905. In 1905 he became head of the grammar school in Sorau and remained so until 1926, when he retired due to an eye problem. In 1908 he was elected as a city councilor in the city ​​administration . At the end of the electoral period he was appointed councilor and later city council. When he left the city administration in 1930, he was appointed city ​​elder .

Engelmann was a member of the Association for the History of Sorau and the Sorau Crafts Association. From 1918 he headed both clubs, in 1933 he became honorary chairman of the history club. In addition, from 1916 to 1930 he was second chairman and from 1930 honorary member of the Niederlausitz Society for History and Archeology .

Engelmann married in 1891. He had three sons and a daughter.

Engelmann worked on the art monuments of the Sorau district and the city of Forst and, in addition to historical treatises in newspapers and magazines, published the following works:
