Günter Wetzel (prehistorian)

Günter Wetzel (born February 22, 1942 in Hassel near Stendal ) is a German prehistorian .

Life

Guenter Wetzel had been a student in his Altmark home archaeologically active. He studied prehistory and early history at the University of Leipzig with Heinz Arno Knorr . He then took part under Ewald Schuldt in the research program on Mecklenburg megalithic graves and dug on the end-Neolithic settlement site of Lanz. In 1974 he received his doctorate in Leipzig with an overall study of the end-Neolithic Schönfeld culture . From 1966 to 1991 he was head of the Cottbus branch of the State Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Potsdam . There he became the driving force behind the development of archaeological rescue activities at the lignite opencast mines and a formative role model for everyone who studied prehistory and early history in the GDR during this time and completed internships, holiday work and voluntary assignments there. From 1991 to 2007 Günter Wetzel was head of the ground monument preservation at the newly organized Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation and the State Archaeological Museum in Potsdam-Babelsberg , later in Wünsdorf . From 1991 to 2009, he was chairman of the Central and East German Association for Antiquity Research.

The main research areas of Wetzel are the Young , Late and End Neolithic of Central Europe , the Lusatian culture , Slavic archeology and the history of the preservation of monuments in East Germany. Günter Wetzel is married to the prehistorian Ingrid Wetzel, and Richard Wetzel is also a prehistoric of their two sons.
