The original Waldhufendorf in the upper Frohnbachtal was first mentioned in 1415 as Cuerchfrone and in 1540 as Oberfrohne . The Vorwerk Oberfrohna was built around 1540 , which belonged to the knightly estate district Limbach in the Electoral Saxon office of Chemnitz . The linen weaving trade developed here in the 16th century. With the introduction of stocking knitting , industrial development began in the middle of the 18th century. In Oberfrohna, however, rather cloth gloves and the finest imitations of leather were produced. Numerous factories were initially built on former farms . The industrialization of the village let the population increase to 3400 inhabitants by 1890. In 1851 Oberfrona came to the royal Saxon court of Limbach as an accessory for the Limbach manor .

Until 1856 Oberfrohna belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Chemnitz . In 1856 Oberfrohna was affiliated to the Limbach court office and in 1875 to the administrative authority of Chemnitz .

With the incorporation of Rußdorf into Oberfrohna in 1935, the population rose to over 10,000. In the same year Oberfrohna was granted city rights.

By resolution of the SED , on July 1, 1950, the two cities of Limbach and Oberfrohna were merged with the district of Rußdorf to form the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna . As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Oberfrohna came as a district of the city of Limbach-Oberfrohna in 1952 to the Chemnitz-Land district in the Chemnitz district (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt-Land district and the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ) 1990 as the Saxon district of Chemnitz was continued. When it was dissolved, Oberfrohna became part of the town of Limbach-Oberfrohna in 1994 and became part of the Chemnitzer Land district , which was opened up in the Zwickau district in 2008.

traffic

Since 1913 Oberfrohna was connected to the railway network by the Limbach – Oberfrohna railway line. This has not been operated since 1999. As part of the Chemnitz model , Limbach-Oberfrohna is to be connected to the Chemnitz Stadtbahn via parts of this disused connection. The plans on the part of Limbach-Oberfrohna and Chemnitz provide for a possible route via KÄNDER, Chemnitz-Röhrsdorf and Chemnitz-Zentrum . In 2003 a majority of the city council favored a corresponding variant, the cost of which is estimated at 16 million euros. Construction wouldn't start before 2015. According to the current status, the completion of the route would be expected in 2020 at the earliest. The cost of the project is estimated at around 100 million euros, three quarters of which will be borne by the federal and state governments. The rest of the way would have to be done by the Central Saxony Transport Association . In July 2012 it became known that the German Regional Railway also wanted to examine the renewed railway operation between Oberfrohna and Kellers .

In addition to several overland routes from Regiobus Central Saxony and the regional transport company Erzgebirge , a minibus (called Citybus) from Fritzsche GmbH runs on one of the two city routes.
