history

The Limbach (Sachs) –Oberfrohna line was opened on July 1, 1913 as an extension of the existing Limbach – Wittgensdorf and Limbach – Wüstenbrand lines . Plans from the 19th century provided for a continuation of the line to Wolkenburg , which was never realized , where it would have merged into the Glauchau – Wurzen railway line . As early as 1885, some places in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg submitted an application for the construction of a railway line from Altenburg via Ziegelheim and Waldenburg to Limbach, but this was also not realized.

During the GDR era, a large part of travel was shifted to faster and more frequent bus routes. The 1981 winter timetable nonetheless indicated seven pairs of passenger trains , some of which ran to and from Karl-Marx-Stadt Hbf (Chemnitz).

The social upheaval in eastern Germany in 1989/90 was associated with considerable changes. Most of the companies in the catchment area stopped their production within a very short time, which led to a drastic collapse in passenger and freight traffic. The 1993 timetable was geared primarily towards rush hour traffic, with only four pairs of trains running on the weekend. The last timetable in 1999, however, again showed eight pairs of trains running every two hours , all of which were tied to and from Chemnitz Hbf. On June 14, 1999, passenger traffic in the Limbach - Oberfrohna section was temporarily switched to buses in the rail replacement service, after no freight traffic had taken place since January 1, 1995.

On February 24, 2000 the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) approved the closure of the line; it was legally enforced on May 31, 2000.

Since December 11, 2005, the express bus line 526 has been operating between Chemnitz, Limbach and Oberfrohna as replacement service for the timetable route 526 with three stops in Limbach-Oberfrohna and another three in downtown Chemnitz. The operation is carried out by Regionalverkehr Erzgebirge (formerly Autobus Sachsen GmbH ) in cooperation with City-Bahn Chemnitz . A special feature is the route over the federal motorway 4 , which means that the journey time is only 30 minutes.

On September 27 and 28, 2008, for the first time since the line was closed, rail traffic took place between the Limbach and Oberfrohna stations on the occasion of the festival weekend celebrating 125 years of Limbach town charter. A VSE motor trolley with a sidecar was used for the journeys, with which up to 10 people could be transported.

future

As part of the Chemnitz model , Limbach-Oberfrohna is to be connected to the Chemnitz Stadtbahn via parts of the disused Wittgensdorf – Oberfrohna railway line. The plans on the part of Limbach-Oberfrohna and Chemnitz provide for a possible route via KÄNDER , Chemnitz-Röhrsdorf and Chemnitz-Zentrum . In 2003 a majority of the city council favored a corresponding variant, the cost of which is estimated at 16 million euros. In the course of 2010, a decision should be made about funding for the realization of the project. The Free State of Saxony therefore refuses to pay its own share of the development costs for new hybrid rail vehicles.

However, construction would not start until 2015. According to the current status, the completion of the route would be expected in 2019 at the earliest. The cost of the project is estimated at around 90 million euros, of which 60% will be borne by the federal government, 25% by the Free State and 15% by the Central Saxony Transport Association. However, since the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen will receive 34 million euros less in funding from the Free State by 2014, the planned completion of the route by 2019 is not certain. In July 2012 it became known that the German Regional Railway also wanted to examine the renewed railway operation between Oberfrohna and Kellers.

The station Limbach was born on April 8, 1872 together with the Neukieritzsch-Chemnitz railway and in Wittgensdorf ob Bf in this opens railway Limbach-Wittgensdorf opened. The line to Wüstenbrand was opened in 1897 and the line to Oberfrohna opened in 1913, making Limbach station a hub.

It had the following names:

  • until 1902: Limbach
  • until 1904: Limbach near Chemnitz
  • until 1911: Limbach (Saxony)
  • until 1933: Limbach (Sa)
  • since 1933: Limbach (Sachs)

1950 ended the passenger traffic on the railway line to Wüstenbrand. After that, goods traffic to Röhrsdorf (last time in 1959) or to the Röhrsdorf substation and the Kändler station (until 1994) took place on a section.

Since the cessation of passenger traffic on the routes from Wittgensdorf ob Bf via Limbach to Oberfrohna in 2000 and the closure in 2003, the station has been out of service. A reactivation as part of the Chemnitz model is conceivable. The area of the station is located on the Ostring and gives a neglected impression. In 2015 the central section of the reception building as well as the reception and baggage hall were demolished. The two multi-storey side wings were preserved.

Oberfrohna

former Oberfrohna train station

Oberfrohna station was built on July 1, 1913 by extending the railway line from Limbach. Since the 19th century plans to extend the route to Wolkenburg station on the Glauchau – Wurzen (Muldentalbahn) railway line were never implemented, the station remained a terminus.

Since the cessation of passenger traffic in 1999/2000 and the closure of the line in 2003, the station has been out of service since June 14, 1999. A reactivation as part of the Chemnitz model is conceivable. The train station can be reached via Lindenstrasse. The reception building is still there.
