In 1993 the Indian Institute for Astrophysics began the systematic search for a suitable location for the observatory. In 1994 the decision was made to move to Hanle and from December 1994 there was a permanent warehouse for the construction of the structure.

It has an optical 2 m infrared telescope and is remotely controlled by Hosakote in Karnataka . There is also a 0.5 m telescope for observing active galactic nuclei , which is operated in cooperation with the McDonell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis , USA . A second 0.5 m telescope is part of the cooperation project in Arizona , which means that both telescopes are 180 degrees apart.
