Hanle is a place in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .

Location and inhabitants

The place is about 275 km southeast of Leh in the Ladakhi part of the Changthang in a side valley of the Indus . Since Hanle is very close to the Line of Actual Control , a permit is required for visitors. The place is also the starting point for trips to the highest motor vehicle pass in the world, the Umling La . 1879 people live in the village.

history

In Hanle there is a monastery from the 17th century that belongs to the Tibetan Drugpa-Kagyu branch. It is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh. It was built under the Ladakhi king Bless Namgyal (* 1616, † 1642) and the Tibetan Lama Ngawang Gyatso.

The Indian Astronomical Observatory has been in operation at 4500 m altitude near Hanle since 2001. It is one of the highest in the world. A small pension is available for visitors if they register in good time.
