The Drugpa-Kagyu ( Tibetan : 'brug pa bka' brgyud ) is one of the so-called "eight smaller schools" of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ). In addition to the Nyingma tradition, however, it is the largest Buddhist school in Bhutan .

Emergence

Dragon in the air

The Drugpa Kagyü School developed from the tradition of the master Lingrepa Pema Dorje (tib .: gling ras pa pad ma rdo rje ; 1128–1188), a student of the Phagmo Drupa Dorje Gyelpo (tib .: phag mo gru pa rdo rje rgyal po ; 1110-1170). It was founded by Lingrepa's disciple Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorje ( gtsang pa rgya ras ye shes rdo rje ; 1161–1211) in western Tibet . Tsangpa Gyare mastered the tantric practices of Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa at an early age. As a tertön (discoverer of spiritual treasures, so-called termas ) he discovered texts and passages that had previously been hidden and burned by Rechungpa - a student of Milarepa . According to legend, the name Drugpa is based on an event during a pilgrimage made by Tsangpa Gyare and his disciples in Tibet. During the hike, a collection of 9 dragons appeared to them, emerging from the earth in front of them and swiftly soaring into the sky. At the same time, a rain of flowers should have fallen. "Drugpa" comes from the Tibetan word drug for "dragon". An important student of Tsangpa Gyare's nephew was Phajo Drugom Shigpo (Tib .: pha jo 'brug sgom zhig po ; 12th-13th centuries) who translated the valleys of Western Bhutan to Buddhism in the first half of the 13th century Drugpa School converted. A simple way of life and the low importance of material possessions are characteristic of this school. The drugpa produced many scholars and siddhas . A well-known master of this line was Mahasiddha Drugpa Künleg, who was famous in Tibet for his “crazy wisdom” . The master Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche (1918–2003), who passed on various transmissions of the Karma Kagyu School in the West , also originally came from the Drugpa School.

The title of the head of the Drukpa-Kagyu is " Gyalwang Drukpa " (Tib .: rgyal dbang 'brug pa ). The Gyalwang Drukpas are considered to be the trulkus of the first Gyalwang Drukpa Tsangpa Gyare.

Subschools

The Drugpa School spawned three other sub-schools:

  1. Bar-drugpa is in the tradition of Tsangpa Gyare . This line produced famous masters, including Sanggye Dorje and Pema Karpo .
  2. Mar-Drugpa was founded by Tsangpa Gyare's student, Lorepa Darma Wangtschug .
  3. To-Drugpa was founded by another student of Tsangpa Gyares, Gotsangpa Gönpo Dorje . Masters Orgyenpa and Yangdzongpa were among the many disciples of this lineage .

Foundation of Bhutan

In the 17th century, Shabdrung (Tib .: zhabs drung ) Ngawang Namgyel (Tib .: ngag dbang rnam rgyal ; 1594–1651), the founder of Bhutan, united the country and established the Drugpa-Kagyu as one of the most important schools. In Bhutan, the Drugpa School is run by the Je Khenpo (Tib .: rje mkhan po ) of Bhutan (an official title), who is the head of the Drugpa monastic community. The current 70th Je Khenpo is Trülku Jigme Chhoeda .
