Lopon Tsechu

Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche (* 1918 near Punakha in Bhutan ; † June 10, 2003 in Bangkok ) was a meditation master of Tibetan Buddhism .

Buddhist training

He received his Buddhist training from his uncle, the tantric master Sherab Dorje , who spent decades of his life solitary in meditation. Lopön Tsechu was close to the Drukpa Kagyu school and was a close confidante of the royal family in Bhutan . Later he met the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje , who became one of his most important teachers. He received the entire transmission of the Karma Kagyu school from him .

Significance for Buddhism in the Himalayas and worldwide

Due to his great activity over several decades, Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche was considered a key figure for the cohesion of the various Buddhist communities in Nepal and the entire Himalayan region. At the invitation of Lama Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah , he traveled regularly between 1987 and 2002 to the centers of Diamond Way Buddhism in Europe, America and Russia.

Connection with Spain

Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche first visited Spain in 1990 when he gave teachings and transmissions at Karma Guen , a Buddhist meditation center near Vélez-Málaga , about 50 kilometers from Benalmádena. He built his first stupa in Karma Guen in 1994, a symbol of peace and prosperity for Spain. Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche was supposed to build 16 more stupas in Europe before his death in 2003. He received Spanish citizenship in 1995 and from then on visited the country regularly, imparting teachings and transmissions.

Name meaning

  • Lopön stands for teacher , specifically a teacher who has mastered all branches of Buddhist teaching is meant here.
  • Tsechu means the 10th day after the new moon of the Tibetan lunar month. This day is dedicated to the tantric master Guru Rinpoche .
  • Rinpoche , literally precious , is an honorary title for realized lamas .
