The stupa in Benalmádena is the largest stupa in Europe at 108 feet or 33 meters high . It was inaugurated on October 5th, 2003 and was the last project of the Buddhist master Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche . The stupa is located in Benalmádena , Málaga , in the Andalusian region, in southern Spain , above the Costa del Sol .

The stupa was inaugurated by HH Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche , the second most important lama of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Also present were Lömpo Sangye Ngodup, Minister of Bhutan , Ole Nydahl and the Mayor of Benalmádena, Enrique Bolin, who played a key role in preparing the plot of land on which the stupa stands.

Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche

Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche first visited Spain in 1990 when he gave teachings and transmissions at Karma Guen , a Buddhist meditation center near Vélez-Málaga , about 50 kilometers from Benalmádena. He built his first stupa in Karma Guen in 1994, a symbol of peace and prosperity for Spain. Lopön Tsechu Rinpoche was supposed to build 16 more stupas in Europe before his death in 2003. He received Spanish citizenship in 1995 and from then on visited the country regularly, imparting teachings and transmissions.
