The list of municipalities in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district gives an overview of the 36 municipalities in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district . It consists of 17 municipalities and 19 cities, including four major district cities . On August 1, 2008, the districts of Saxon Switzerland (district town Pirna ) and Weißeritzkreis (district town Dippoldiswalde ) were combined to form the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains with the district town of Pirna.

The cities of Dippoldiswalde , Freital , Glashütte , Heidenau , Hohnstein , Neustadt in Saxony , Rabenau , Sebnitz , Stolpen and Wilsdruff , like the communities of Bannewitz , Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach and Kreischa, are not members of an administrative community.

The district has a total area of ​​1,653.64 km² . The city of Altenberg has the largest area within the district with 145.81 km². This is followed by the cities of Dippoldiswalde with 104.13 km² and Glashütte with 95.57 km². Twelve cities and municipalities have an area of ​​over 50 km², nine are larger than 30 km² and a further twelve cities and municipalities have an area that is larger than 10 km² but not larger than 30 km². Three municipalities have an area of ​​less than 10 km². The municipality of Rathen has the smallest area with 3.58 km².

The major district town of Freital with 39,703 residents has the largest proportion of the district's population of 245,586, followed by the district town of Pirna with 38,422 and the city of Heidenau with 16,540 residents. With 11,104 inhabitants, the municipality of Bannewitz is the largest municipality and the seventh largest administrative unit in the district. Liebstadt is the smallest town with 1270 inhabitants. Seven cities and municipalities have over 10,000 inhabitants, eight cities and municipalities have 5,000 to 10,000 inhabitants. The population of nine municipalities is between 2,000 and 5,000. Twelve municipalities have fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. Rathen has the fewest inhabitants with 349 inhabitants.

The entire district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains has a population density of 149 inhabitants per km². The city of Heidenau has the highest population density with 1494 inhabitants per km², followed by the large district towns of Freital with 980 inhabitants per km² and Pirna with 725 inhabitants per km². Four cities and municipalities have a population density that is greater than 400 inhabitants per km², 13 administrative units have a population density of 100 to 400 inhabitants per km². 19 municipalities have less than 100 inhabitants per km². The town of Liebstadt and the municipality of Rosenthal-Bielatal have the lowest population density, each with 35 inhabitants per km².
