Detailed memorial texts

↑ The protected area shows a high density of historical evidence for the Elbe sandstone mining. Many old photo and film documents from this area can be found in various archives. The public interest in preservation manifests itself in specialist publications, but above all in the activities of Mr. Andreas Bartsch, who with his quarry tours, the establishment of a "quarry path" and his collection on the history of the quarry at the old stone saw (see below) a lot for the presence of the facilities in general Awareness did. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains stand for a versatile and long-term use of natural resources by people. For centuries, in some cases since the late Middle Ages, stone mining helped shape the economic and social history of the region and decisively changed the “prominent” landscape. The valley from Pirna to the Czech border became wider due to the mining and on the one hand "softer" due to the dumping, while in the upper segments it was steeper, which often attracts many tourists as a "natural phenomenon", is partly man-made, i.e. a cultural landscape. From the beginning of the 20th century, this activity was largely reduced. In some places, however, this stone is still being extracted today, the presence of which is unmistakable in buildings in Dresden, but also in Hamburg, and which in many places helps shape the local image. Grindstones and millstones were also products of this line of business. The mining technique was characteristic of the area. The sandstone walls were "felled". To do this, the walls had to be undercut and supported until the supports were blown away and the wall fell. The dangerous work of "hollowing out" was well paid for not without reason, because it was dangerous and repeatedly claimed deaths. The wall fell on a so-called Horzel bed, a mostly one meter thick layer of rubble stones, so that the largest possible pieces were preserved. The overburden resulting from the crushing was problematic and initially fell as far as the Elbe and increasingly hindered shipping. Later heaps were created in suitable places and corresponding dump bridges. Characteristic of this regional industry were also the quarry numbers, which can still be found on the quarries above and below (often in walls) with the same digits. Above they indicated the adjacent mining areas of various quarry owners and at the same time the loading points to the stone ships below. Both levels were connected by transport systems such as slides, and later by braking mountains with their carts. The trolleys were lowered with platforms, on rails, some of which were secondly used. The quarry numbers increased to the right of the Elbe in the direction of the Czech border and then further down the left Elbe, the subject population in question extends from numbers 29 to 48. A number of well-known artists dedicated themselves to the subject, perhaps the best known, especially in the first half of the 20th century Robert Sterl . Some also lived in the quarry, so close to the "old stone saw" Pol Cassel and Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler (who died in the Pirnaer Sonnenstein during the Nazi era) . In this respect, the quarries are also relevant to art history. The landscape-shaping relevance of the fractures is evident, as is their economic, social and technological significance. The main historical connecting path between the individual quarries with its staircases (identical to the already marked “quarry path”) must remain accessible to the public in order to preserve it, which the municipality of Wehlen should take care of.
