  3. Markt Stolpen
It is known that the Stolpen city council selected the most beautiful columns for this monument in the quarry on the west side of the castle in 1818. The column group has a height of 3.8 meters from the foundation to the top of the main column. The four central columns, seen from the north, rest on sandstone blocks of different heights. The tallest protruding main column is 2.5 meters long, 0.50 meters in diameter and 1.6 meters in circumference - it weighs at least 1,500 kg. The other 3 pillars are between 2.85 and 2 meters long and have a diameter of 30 to 40 cm. These columns also weigh at least 700 - 1000 kg. The actual size of the central pillars is masked by surrounding smaller pillars. The center of gravity of the large central pillars rests at the foot of the same due to the heavy weight. The stability is achieved through the precise alignment of the pillars. After all, the principle has proven itself very well for many decades. This monument is located on the border between Lusatian granodiorite (525 million years old) and Stolpen basalt (25 million years old).
  4. In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars . Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He entrusted Magister Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679 - 1742) with the implementation. The system of post mile pillars comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km). This mile system was the first European traffic management system. As part of the nationally significant postal system, the pillar considered here is of great importance for the history of traffic (LfD / 2013).

  8. Monument text: The former inn was built in 1882 as a rifle house on the site of a previous building from 1817 and is still an integral part of the special townscape of Stolpen on an old parcel a hundred meters below the historic town center (and formerly outside the walls) . The building with a deep cubature , seven to five axes, two-storey, with segmented arched windows enlarged compared to the ground floor with an old sprout on the upper floor, which points to the hall behind it. The cube is crowned by a flat hipped roof without extensions. Originally, the west and north sides were each divided by a flat central projection, the triangular overhangs of which protruded somewhat into the roof area. These disappeared, as did the plaster structure, the cornice and (before that) the two-sided inscription “Restoration Schützenhaus”, probably in the early 1970s. The building has a slightly recessed extension with a gable roof on its east side. The main entrance on the west side still shows a vestment with a late classicist influence, which was also lightened by its flat triangular gable. The parcel is narrow, but about a hundred meters to the east undeveloped, with the exception of a small half-timbered building 25 m east of the rifle house, the so-called "loading house". This name, as well as the free area that already existed roughly in size before 1750 (engraving by Nestler, publ. 1764), point to the use for shooting purposes. A rifle guild existed in Stolpen, the former suburbium of the Ortsburg at the crossroads of old long-distance routes, definitely since the 16th century. The building of architectural, local history, local history and urban planning importance has been used by the Catholic Church since 1951 (LfD / 2014).
  9. The bridge is 22.0 m long, with the two arch-shaped vaults each having a clear width of around 7.00 m. The central pillar is designed as an icebreaker. With the adjoining retaining walls, the total length of the structure is 50.0 m on the upstream side and 43.0 m on the downstream side. The usable lane width is 3.0 m. The strong curvature of the gradient gives the bridge a special charm. The two river openings and the parapets made of simple sandstone blocks underline this. Sandstone was also used as a building material for the entire bridge. The central pillar is designed as an icebreaker. The bridge at the sheep farm passes under the Wesenitz and crosses a municipal road (Untere Straße). It was renovated in 1991/92.

  13. In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Prof. Christian August Nagel , according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as "Nagelsche columns". This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance (LfD / 2014).
